The “In Dialogue with China Study Trip – Exploring Yunnan 2025,” organised by the Student Experience and Development Section (SEDS) of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and the University General Education, was held from 12 to 18 May 2025. Providing students with opportunities for cultural exchange and experiential learning. 18 students from CUHK explored Kunming and Dali in Yunnan over a seven-day study tour, gained insights into Yunnan's historical culture and economic industries by visiting local universities, cultural landmarks, and businesses.
During the seven-day tour, students visited Dali Old Town, Erhai Lake, Yunnan Baiyao Group, and the Yunnan Nationalities Museum. They also experienced intangible cultural heritage by learning to tie-dye and Jia Ma crafting at a local workshop. Additionally, they visited Yunnan University, Yunnan University of Nationalities, and the Coffee Academy at Dali Vocational and Technical College of Agriculture and Forestry, engaging in conversations with local university students. These discussions ranged from campus life to national sentiments, reflecting deeply on topics such as economic development, local culture, and personal growth. Here are some thoughts and reflections from the participating students:
Ms. Caroline CHENG, a first-year student majoring in Computer Science and Engineering, shared that “after gaining a deeper understanding of intangible cultural heritage and development of local industry, I felt a wisdom and attitude of being deep-rooted in the native land. Whether it is roses, coffee or Chinese medicine, the locals not only pursue modernisation, but also their cultural roots and adapt to their local conditions.”
Mr. Gary HONG, a first-year Business Administration student, remarked that “the most valuable takeaway was the friendship formed with my fellow participants; the sincere interactions with the teachers and students in Yunnan; the warm greetings from the locals. All of this made the trip more than just a simple journey, but became a meaningful cultural dialogue.”
This study trip to Yunnan, themed “Yunnan and Hong Kong · Youth Building Dreams”, expanded students' horizons, allowing them to understand the relationship between the unique geographical resources of Yunnan, historical culture, and economic development. China is vast, with each province possessing distinct cultures and characteristics. Not to be limited by preconceived notions, but to maintain a positive and humble attitude, learning to appreciate, actively contribute, and recognise our roles and responsibilities in the development of the nation.
