Mobile CU Small-group Reunion 2024-25: Enrollment Open for October Events

Updated: Oct 2

At this moment, feel your breath, savour the beauty of everyday life, explore endless possibilities.

In this rapidly changing era, we focus on the present moment, observe daily life closely, discover new perspectives, explore different elements and issues in the city, and engage with and connect to the community and other people. This year, there will be several group activities led by current or past CUHK teachers with various themes and forms. Details of the rich program for October are as follows:

1st Session – Exploring Self-Identity as a Drag Queen: Screening of the Taiwanese Documentary 'Drag in Me’

Join us for a screening of ‘Drag in me’, led by a Taiwanese director. Initially set to film his queer teacher, the director found himself immersed in the world of drag, adopting the new identity of ‘Rachel’. This transformation provided him with a platform for a profound dialogue on self-identity and self-discovery. Professor Eric Poon will lead a post-screening discussion to dissect the film, offering insights into its themes and messages.

Participants will enjoy a dinner with Prof. Mathews at the Chungking Mansions, a dilapidated commercial and residential hub for Africans, South-east Asians, Pakistani and many more ethnic minorities in the heart of Hong Kong’s tourist district. Its uniqueness has attracted film makers while foodies were attracted to authentic Indian and Nepalese cuisines. Prof. Mathews will share with participants on the far less glamorous side of globalisation demonstrated in the Mansions.

4th Session – Exploring Hong Kong Public Housing

Over 40% of Hong Kong's population resides in public housing, a vital part of their experience often imbued with cultural connotations. It is seen as a more human, deeper, and authentic reflection of Hong Kong. Rather than romanticising this urban landscape, let's question its origins. where does our imagination of public housing come from? Who and how constructs the environment of public housing? What roles do people play within it? We have selected three public housing estates in Tseung Kwan O to explore Hong Kong through a different lens, starting from seemingly ordinary urban spaces.

Hau Tak Estate - Filming location of Stephen Chow's movie “Out of the Dark”: Popular cultural representation of public housing

King Lam Estate - From design layout to daily management: Construction and reconstruction of residents’ sense of identity

Kin Ming Estate - “A Little Taiwan” in Hong Kong: Remembering and Losing History Nearby

Dr. Leung Kai Chi (Part-time Lecturer of School of Journalism and Communication and commentator on social affairs. He journeyed through 254 public housing estates in a year and authored “香港公屋:方格子的吶喊,” themed on public housing.)
